Minden, Nevada

Minden is a census-designated place (CDP) in Douglas County, Nevada, United States.[3] The population was 3,001 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Douglas County[4] and is adjacent to the town of Gardnerville. The Douglas campus of the Western Nevada College is located in Minden.

It was founded in 1906 by Heinrich Friedrich Dangberg Jr., who named it after the town of Minden, in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia, which was near his father's birthplace.[5] A large share of the first settlers were Germans.[6] Minden was founded on company land of the Dangberg Home Ranch and Dangberg commissioned most of the town's early buildings.[7] Minden has had a post office since 1906.[8]

Minden sounded a "sundown siren" at 6pm almost every evening from 1917 until 2023, originally signifying that members of the Washoe Indian tribe were required to leave town by 6:30pm or face jail or fine.[9][10]Douglas County fully repealed its sundown ordinance in the mid-1970s.

Carson City, Nevada

Carson City is an independent city and the capital of the U.S. state of Nevada.[3] As of the 2020 census, the population was 58,639, making it the 6th most populous city in the state. The majority of the city's population lives in Eagle Valley, on the eastern edge of the Carson Range, a branch of the Sierra Nevada, about 30 miles (50 km) south of Reno. The city is named after the mountain man Kit Carson. The town began as a stopover for California-bound immigrants, but developed into a city with the Comstock Lode, a silver strike in the mountains to the northeast. The city has served as Nevada's capital since statehood in 1864; for much of its history it was a hub for the Virginia and Truckee Railroad, although the tracks were removed in 1950.

Before 1969, Carson City was the county seat of Ormsby County. That year, after a referendum approved merging the city and the county, the state legislature issued a revised city charter that merged them into the Consolidated Municipality of Carson City.[4] With the consolidation, the city limits extend west across the Sierra Nevada to the California state line in the middle of Lake Tahoe. Like other independent cities in the United States, it is treated as a county-equivalent for census purposes.

Goldfield, Nevada

Goldfield is a census-designated place in and the county seat of Esmeralda County, Nevada.

It is the locus of the Goldfield CDP which had a resident population of 268 at the 2010 census,[3] down from 440 in 2000. Goldfield is located 247 miles (398 km) southeast of Carson City, along U.S. Route 95.

Mountain City, Nevada

Mountain City is a small census-designated place in Elko County, Nevada, United States,[3] within the Mountain City Ranger District of the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest. The community, located on State Route 225 approximately 16 miles (26 km) south of the Idaho border, is situated on the Owyhee River at an elevation of approximately 5,620 feet (1,710 m).

In 1870, Mountain City was founded after a silver mine was located in the area: over a thousand people lived in Mountain City until the silver ran out, causing an exodus from the town.

Tuscarora, Nevada

Tuscarora (Shoshoni language: Tosa Konoki[2]) is an unincorporated community in Elko County, Nevada, United States.[3] The community lies on the east side of the Tuscarora Mountains approximately 40 miles north of Carlin.[4] Tuscarora is part of the Elko Micropolitan Statistical Area. Far from being a ghost town, as several websites proclaim, Tuscarora is home to two schools, a library, a post office and a bar and grill, as well as homes for its remaining residents.

Tuscarora was founded in Elko County after an expedition by trader William Heath to find gold, in 1867. The community derives its name from the Tuscarora people.[5] As miners flocked to the town, a fort was built to offer protection from Indian raids and a water ditch was created to supply the town with water. Many Chinese men who had been employed by the Central Pacific Railroad (CPR) relocated to the town and began placer mining. By 1870, Tuscarora had a population of 119, of whom 104 were Chinese. A post office was established at Tuscarora in 1871.[6] A boom began following the discovery of silver ore.[7] In 1879, the population of Tuscarora reached 1,500, making it one of the larger settlements in Nevada.[8]

Paradise Valley, Nevada

Paradise Valley is a census-designated place (CDP) in Humboldt County, Nevada, United States, near the Santa Rosa Ranger District of Humboldt National Forest. It is located at the northern terminus of Nevada State Route 290, about 19 miles (31 km) northeast of U.S. Highway 95 and a total of 40 miles (64 km) north of Winnemucca. The town is located in a broad valley, with the Santa Rosa Range of mountains just to the northwest. At the 2010 census, the population of the CDP was 109.[3]

A post office has been in operation at Paradise Valley since 1871.[4] According to tradition, in the 1860s a prospector declared "What a paradise!" upon seeing the valley, after having traveled through the surrounding arid territory.[5]

Jean, Nevada

Jean is a small commercial town in Clark County, Nevada, United States, located approximately 20 miles (32 km) south of the Las Vegas hotel-casino corridor along Interstate 15, and 12 mi (19 km) north of the Nevada-California border.

There is no land zoned residential in Jean. The town is primarily zoned commercial, industrial, manufacturing, government and institutional. A 3 million square foot mega-warehouse complex is currently in development at the Jean exit at Interstate 15 (I-15).[1]

Jean will also be the entry point for the new Southern Nevada Supplemental Airport (SNSA), currently in development.

Zephyr Cove, Nevada

Zephyr Cove is a community and census-designated place (CDP) in Douglas County, Nevada, United States. The population was 565 at the 2010 census.[3] Prior to 2010 it was part of the Zephyr Cove–Round Hill Village CDP.

Before Zephyr Cove was established, the Native American Washoe people lived around the area. The first Anglo-American settlers to encounter the area were Kit Carson and John Fremont in 1844.[4]

Alamo, Nevada

Alamo is an unincorporated town[2] in Lincoln County, Nevada, United States, about 90 miles (140 km) north of Las Vegas along U.S. Route 93. Its elevation is 3,449 feet (1,051 m). As of the 2010 census it had a population of 1,080.[3]

A post office has been in operation at Alamo since 1905.[4] The community was named in commemoration of the Battle of the Alamo.[5] A large share of the first settlers were Mormons.[6]

Ruby Valley, Nevada

Ruby Valley is an unincorporated community in Ruby Valley, in Elko County, Nevada, United States.[2]

It was the site of the Ruby Valley Pony Express Station, which has since been moved 60 miles to Elko, Nevada and restored and listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
